Post Malone - Goodbyes

Republic Records

  • The music video opens up with a close up shot of the main character inside the front car window. The connotation of this shot shows that the character 'Post Malone' is unposed and in his private personalised situation hence his body language of his arm casually resting on the side of the window frame with a cigar.
  • The use of his body language reflects his personality as a calm and chill character.
  • The use of cool light green tint on the front car window isolates the audience and the character which could represent the male's persona as an isolated character.
  • The use of the black dress codes connotes death, darkness and sinister atmosphere. This allows us to communicate with the character's emotion and perhaps the evil motives he's planning out in his head which later foreshadows a violent and disturbing consequence.
  • Also the use of the black dress codes represent him towards the idea of a villain, criminal and troublemaker.
  • The use of the knife prop held by the Post Malone connotes ideas of violence, this represent him as a criminal or a villainous character. Furthermore the extensive tattoos in his face and hands could represent him as a lawless figure.
  • The use of title page introduces the song and presents it more like a movie. The director and producer did this intentionally to make it look like one.
  • This makes the audience intrigued and more interested to see what else there is in the video.
  • The use of 'Title Page' suggest that the music video will unravel us the narrative of its story.
  • The title page uses the colour red in bold colour font which connotes the idea of blood reiterating the idea of violence. This combined together with black colour background creates a disturbing atmosphere.
  • The layout of the title page introduces creators of the music video and the title of the song, this gives information to the audience on who they expect to see in the video
  • The use of establishing shot advances the narrative, this allows the audience to have an expectation of what will happen next which enhances their pressure.
  • The gloomy grey clouds together with the blue tone connotes ideas of fear and ominous feeling to the audience. This reinforces the film's dark scary conventions.
  • The use of the graves and black bird surrounding the main character are used as codes to reinforce the convention of a zombie film whilst also to instil ideas of death.
  • The direct mode of address of the main character allows the audience to communicate with him directly making them feel more involved with the music video.
  • This suits the stipulated 18- 34 year old audience as they are engaged in ideas that put them in tense and chilling experiences. Also they are engaged in music videos that are unique and genres that contain repetition and difference which this video succeeds in doing.
