KERRANG! - Front cover and Double Page

Context

  • Kerrang is a type of magazine, It is a British weekly magazine devoted to rock and metal music which is currently published by Wasted Talent. Kerrang magazine was first published on 6th June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sound newspaper. Kerrang was initially devoted to British heavy metal and the rise of hard rock acts. Because British heavy metal and the rise of hard rock acts was a new wave at the time, in the early 2000s it became the best selling weekly British music magazine.
Kerrang magazine analysis

  • The text edit producer of Kerrang magazine used the rule of thirds to divide the magazine cover. The masthead 'KERRANG!' is situated at the top, the main image of the two characters and their band name is in the middle and the major story of other related music genre is at the bottom.
  • The producer did this style of layout for the readers to easily breakdown the parts of the magazine giving them a clear understanding of the cover.
  • Twenty-One Pilots is an American indie rock duo band in America Columbus Ohio. It was formed in 2009 featuring Tyler Joseph and Joshua Dun.
  • The camera shot used for the front cover magazine is a two-shot, this is used to emphasise the importance of the two characters. The fact that they are positioned in the middle of the magazine presents them as central characters of the front page magazine. Also, the equal proximity, depth of field and framing of the shot indicates the two characters relationship as equivalent. This connotes that both the characters Joshua and Tyler are each respectively equal important artist in the band and further reiterates their description as a 'duo band'.
  • The Masthead has the original Kerrang font style. It is placed in the middle with the central characters but is placed in the background behind Joshua and Tyler. This gives more prominence to the two figures. The Masthead however has used relevant colours with big bold white text in red coating allowing it to still be eye-catching. This also allows readers to identify what type of magazine it is.
  • The use the yellow flash circle stands out on the page and is the same colour as the yellow stripes taped on Joshua's and Tyler's costumes. This is a symbol of their logo which means new album release. This is further reiterated with 'Bandito UK tour special' connoting that a new album has recently been released at the time. The text producer's use of lexis language "Exclusive" is persuasive encouraging the audience to buy tickets. It also makes the duo band appear popular. This could reflect and represent Kerrang as a mainstream magazine
  • The use of the cover lines invites the readers to know more inside the magazine. The band name 'Black metal' helps to establish Kerrang magazine's rock and metal type of music. Also, this shows that the text producer of Kerrang magazine targets a rock music genre demography. The text producer may have therefor chosen 'Black metal' to target these audiences.
  • The duo is globally known for its best singles 'stressed out', 'Ride',  'Heathens' and their recent new single release  'level of concern'. The duo has received a Grammy Award for best pop duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for stressed out. The release of single 'Heathens' also made a success through which it was named the group first alternative artist to have two concurrent top ten singles in the United States.
  • Therefore, because of these achievements, this duo band are quite a popular figure. The fact that the producer has presented them here could show that Kerrang is quite a popular mainstream magazine.
  • However alternatively because Twenty One Pilots is rock band, the magazine producer may have used them in the front cover to target an audience who are into the culture of rock music.
  • The use of the dress codes with closed buttons and zipped hoodie connotes a sense of coolness. This represents Tyler and Josh more as rebels or gangster figures which suits the genre of rock music.

The double-page spread has the conventional layout of a medium shot picture in one page and text writing in the other.
The double-page spread shows the musician Davey Havok. We can tell that the article is based on rock music through the use of the mid-shot which shows his tattoo iconography and cross symbol necklace with an earring. This was intentionally chosen by the producer because the audience might associate sleeve tattoos with heavy metal music.
The body language and facial expression chosen by the producer represents the style of rock music. This allows the producer to target his audience who are into rock band music.
The light grey background with white circle lights around the edges of the double-page connotes a stage-like atmosphere. This again targets rock band aficionado audience which entices and catches their attention encouraging them to read.
The use of the heading is also a pull quote written in bold, this creates a sense of realism for the audience encouraging them to interact more with the magazine.
The question from the interviewer is in a different colour from the answer of the Davey Havok, this allows them to be separated and distinguished between the two, this makes it easier for the audience to understand.
The use of the byline in the spread gives information for the readers which tells them who the journalist and photographer are, this gives them credit for their work.
The purpose of this double-page spread is to attract rock music aficionados who are fans of Davey Havok. The double-page spread is about Davey, a lead vocalist of the alternative rock band AFI. He is quite a popular figure and this helps the producer to target his audience of rock music aficionados.
