XL Recordings is a British independent record label founded in 1989. It is run and co-owned by Richard Russel. An artist who has signed and worked with XL include Adele, Dizzee Rascal and The White Stripes. Russel had broadened the music of the label whilst maintaining a credo (a belief which guides someone's actions) of working with artists he saw was original and inventive - independent. Its headquarters is located in London.
The label was released to produce rave and dance music. It was originally an imprint of Beggars Banquet's more commercial dance label Citybeat, which was known for records by acts such as Freeez, Starlight, Dream Frequency and the Ultramagnetic MCs.
In the same year, XL released Dizzee Rascal's first solo album, Boy in da Corner for which Dizzee was awarded the Mercury Prize for the best album of 2003.
The label release albums worldwide and operates across a range of genres. During the early nineties, XL releases were dance oriented ranging from Belgium techno to breakbeat hardcore to drum and bass.
In 1993, Halkes left XL to form the EMI-owned commercial dance label Positiva, and subsequently his own independent commercial dance label Incentive.
After Palmer retired in 1996, Russell took over the running of the business. Russell later broadened the musical horizons of the label whilst maintaining a credo of working with artists he saw as original and inventive.
Adele - Feel my love
XL Recordings
- The music video begins with an establishing shot to inform the audience of the setting and scenery.
- A mixture of dark green and black colour is used to reflect the mood of the atmosphere. The dark green colour connotes ideas of sadness and perhaps regret. The fact that she is staring outside a window reinforces this which could suggest that she's dwelling about something. These codes could suggest to the audience that maybe she feels broken from her past experiences.
- As she gazes the window view. A green and blue tint is used to reflect her mood and emotions. The colour blue and green connotes ideas of isolation and jealousy. Using these colour tones makes it clearer for the audience to find out that it maybe it is used to reflect what she is feeling.
- This is reinforced in her melancholic pale facial expression suggesting how she misses what had happened in the past and would do anything at any cost to get him/her back. Later on the diegetic lyrics in her song "nothing that I wouldn't do" reiterates this
- The videographer also cleverly blurs the background to focus the audiences' attention on Adele. The use of medium shot allows the audience to empathise with her and connect with her on a personal level and creating a relationship between the viewer and the actor.
- The target audience could vary but the fact that Adele has been in the music industry for a long time could show that the main target audience is the older generation. The audience is targeted through the use of costume (her stereotypical hairstyle), graphics and the actor. Also, the older form of technology/ iconography such as the flip-phone used in the music video reflects the time period and the older generation. This shows that the main target audience is the older demographics.
- The Industry is reflected through the use of high production value. This seen in through the mise-en-scene. The music video evidently has a high budget which is reflected through the costumes, graphics and iconography.
Jungle - Busy Earnin
XL Recordings
- The use of establishing shot conveys information about the place and the number of people. The beginning of the shot captures them in a group connoting a sense of community and unity
- The use of a slow-motion camera which slowly focuses/zooms in on the group creates a sense of charisma. This combined together with the upbeat music builds up energy. This persuades the audience to tag and joins along with the music
- The dress codes that they are all wearing are all sports clothing, this is combined well with the physical gestures that they make. This represents the music video as an energetic and productive exercise video encouraging people to dance along. These dress codes also symbolise their personality showing that they love to interact in sport
- The codes of expression and gestures that they make when they smile show that they are all happy, this combination of media language codes suggests that they feel a sense of achievement
- The music video 'Busy Earnin' has been an influential and popular song and had been included in various TV series such as the playlists of FIFA 15 and Season 2 Episode 6 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
- The use of the direct mode of address draws the audience attention in the AV this again encourages them to dance along
- In addition, the use of the body language and facial expression act as indicators of the character's happy and positive emotions
